Young Penalists Committee 2014-2019

During the 19th International Congress of Penal Law in Rio de Janeiro in September 2014, our team was elected to serve as the Young Penalists Committee until the next International Congress in 2019.

Manuel Espinoza is a Consultant in Governance Risk Management and Compliance matters. He studied law  at the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) and the University of Tübingen (Germany). Has worked as an consultant at the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Furthermore, he was an academic researcher in a project of the European Commission regarding corporate criminal liability and compliance programs. He has worked as a lawyer for Mexican law firms as well as in Germany for Roxin Rechstanwälte LLP, where he advised companies and public entities in compliance matters and corporate liability. Manuel Espinoza started his PhD. under the supervision of Profesor Dr. Joachim Vogel on matters of finanicial criminal law. Nowadays, he is a PhD candidate in Freiburg (Germany).

I am currently working at Ghent University Belgium, as a post-doctoral research and assistant professor. I have obtained a PhD Degree (2012) from Ghent University after having obtained a Master's degree in Law (2006) and in Criminology (2007) from the Free University of Brussels. As an assistant professor I am responsible for courses on (European) criminal law and rights of the child. Those topics are also the focus of my research.

Working at Kyoto University, Japan, as a research fellow on the issue of "systematization of substantial international criminal law from the perspective of jurisdiction and procedure". Obtained LLD (Osaka University, Japan) and LLM (Leiden University, the Netherlands) and interned at the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Having submitted my PhD thesis in Tübingen, Germany, I currently work as a researcher at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Germany, and lecture at a master's course on "digital forensics". I obtained an LLM at the University of Pennsylvania and passed both state examinations in Germany.
